One of the most important things in a person's life is their new baby. Above all protection from any injury is the first thought in a parent's mind. In this regard, anything purchased must be inspected carefully to be sure there are no dangerous, loose ends or other objects, which could cause damage. One of these items is baby play mats.
Today there are many play mats on the market that offer a variety of features. Some of these products are manufactured in the United States while others are manufactured overseas. In contemplating a purchase, it is important that one read the label to see what products are used in the manufacture of these items.
Past inspections by officials have sometimes found materials used that could be harmful to babies. Poor construction is a special thing to look out for. Checking the stitching is very important as well as the type of dye used in making the material. Both of these could be harmful. If stitching came loose and the child became entangled or if the dye is not a proven safe product, untold harm could occur.
Some baby mats are made of foam that is very soft and comfortable. However, a young baby does have a tendency to chew everything and, therefore, thought should be given as to whether he or she might chew off a piece that could become a choking hazard. It seems these would be more appropriate for an older child.
One type of play mat that is very educational is the one that has an overhead arrangement with dangling items for the baby to play with. This offers entertainment as well and keeps the child's eyes, hands, and feet in motion. These are usually very colorful and the items attached are visually attractive. Ensuring that these items are secure and cannot be worked free with busy little hands and mouths should be of primary concern.
Many play mats are conveniently constructed so that they can be rolled up very easily and carried or stored taking up little room. This is an excellent choice when visiting others as the child can be put down on something familiar, which establishes a sense of security in any environment encountered. This eliminates the problem often faced when putting them down in a strange place.
Today's manufacturers have been very creative in designing special play mats. Some have musical components installed so that when the child pushes a certain spot music comes out. Others have mirrors and other attractive things. It is important, when considering the purchase of one of these items, to carefully examine and consider the possibility of one of these items coming loose and causing an injury.
The many colors and additions to baby play mats often make it difficult to make a choice. They are so attractively made, with bright colors and additional items, all look very good. Again, caution must be at the forefront of one's mind when making a selection in order to be sure that there is nothing that can come loose and cause harm to the child.
